CREATING A VIRTUAL CDROM ON VIO (STEP BY STEP WITH SCREEN SHOT)

THIS DOCUMENT WILL PROVIDE YOU STEP BY STEP CONFIGURATION OF VIRTUAL CDROM FROM A VIO SERVER TO LPARS

 
CREATING A VIRTUAL CDROM USING VIO
Virtual cdrom provides a way to virtualise a physical cdrom as a virtual cdrom we can also provide a iso image to clients as a cdrom , we can also create a blank virtual dvd ram drive and provide to the client 
To create a virtual cdrom  


In hmc
Click on Server ,Select the managed server (check box )
Select tasks
Configurations
Virtual Resources
Virtual storage Management




Select optical devices





In the figure there is a virtual Media library already present , for this exercise I will
just delete that virtual library first to show every thing from scratch

Click on Delete  library 


 





NOW TO CREATE LIBRARY


Select create Library
Select the torage pool in which you want to keep the media (iso image) and library
size
 






Select Ok and wait




After creating a virtual cdrom we have to add a media to the cdrom , a iso image can also be used as a media , or we can create a blank media

Now from the Select Action , select ‘Add Media’
Add a iso image file or create a blank media to create a iso file




Provide media name and size of the blank media
Click on OK and wait






NOW TO PROVIDE THE NEWLY CREATED VIRTUAL MEDIA TO LPAR


In the select action option select Modify Partition Assignment



Select the partition to assign and select force option at the bottom , click on OK
 


IF YOU DONT SELECT FORCE OPTION THEN YOU WILL GET AN ERROR



Wait
   


At the client side verify for the new media
run device configuration utility at client side

 

# hostname
gurapp107


# cfgmgr



Method error (/usr/lib/methods/cfg_vclient -l vscsi2 ):
0514-040 Error initializing a device into the kernel.

And verify the creation of new media
# lsdev -C|grep cd
cd0 Available Virtual SCSI Optical Served by
VIO Server
