0516-1162 extendvg: Warning, The Physical Partition Size of 32 requires the creation of 1152 partitions for hdisk8
Complete error message : “0516-1162 extendvg: Warning, The Physical Partition Size of 32 requires the creation of 1152 partitions for hdisk8. The limitation for volume group datavg is 1016 physical partitions per physical volume. Use chvg command with -t option to attempt to change the maximum Physical Partitions per Physical volume for this volume group.I encountered this error while trying to extend a VG using command “extendvg datavg hdisk8″
Reason : In a Normal VG, one PV can have maximum of 1016 PP ( To read more about VG in AIX go to the article Volume Group In AIX ) . Now here hdisk8 is large enough to have more then 1016 PP that is 1152 .
Solution : Here we need to increase the t factor of the VG ( To read more about factor value in AIX go to the article Volume Group In AIX ) . I have done it as below and it resolve the issue
Step 1 : I have change the t factor to 2 , now datavg VG can have max 16 PV with max 2032 PP each PV
root@webmanual: / # chvg -t 2 datavg
|
Step 2 : Extend the VG now
root@webmanual: / # extendvg datavg hdisk8 |
Normal VG: 32/factor = new value of MAX PVs
Big VG: 128/factor= new value of MAX PVs
-t PPs per PV MAX PV (Normal) MAX PV (Big)
1 1016 32 128
2 2032 16 64
3 3048 10 42
4 4064 8 32
5 5080 6 25
…n
“chvg -t” can be used online either increasing or decreasing the value of the factor.
